Board Members

The Board of Trustees of the Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School is responsible for safeguarding and upholding the mission of the Day School. Trustees serve as fiduciaries of the Day School and are responsible for setting policy and long range planning. Day School trustees support the school with their time, experience, vision and resources and participate in numerous ways to further the life of the Day School.

Day School bylaws specify the Board of Trustees can have a maximum of 25 voting members. In addition to the voting trustees, the following persons serve as ex-officio Board members: the head of school, head of Jewish studies, PTC board representatives, elected faculty representative, president and senior rabbi of the Anshe Emet Synagogue. Ex-officio members of the board attend board meetings but are not eligible to vote.

Board members share a passionate commitment and dedication to Jewish education and to the success and future of the Day School.

Current voting members of the Board of Trustees include parents and grandparents of Day School students, Day School alumni and parents of alumni.

The Board does much of its work through committees. There are currently ten committees of the Board. Parents and members of the community participate in many of the committees. Each trustee participates in at least one of the following committees:

  • Committee on Trustees*
  • Community Affairs and Strategy Committee
  • Development Committee
  • Endowment Committee*
  • Executive Committee*
  • Finance Committee*
  • Financial Aid Committee
  • Long Range Planning Committee
  • Synagogue Relations/Capital Repair Committee
  • Technology Committee

* = committee members are only trustees.

Consistent with best practices of independent schools, the Day School Board of Trustees sets policy; the Day School administration implements policy. The board is responsible for hiring the head of school. All decisions regarding day-to-day operations of the Day School, including all employee decisions, are the responsibility of the head. The administration is responsible for management, personnel and admissions decisions and for curricular issues.

Rabbi Goldman envisioned a school with strong values and a commitment to excellence. Sixty years later, the Day School's Board of Trustees is the guardian of this important vision and is working hard to ensure its future.

Trustees do get involved in financial management and planning. The board makes major funding decisions for the school, sets the yearly operating budget, including tuition, adopts investment policies and guides the finances of the Day School.

On an annual basis, the board completes a written evaluation of the head of school, the board chair and the board as a whole. Individual trustees evaluate themselves as well. The evaluations measure progress toward existing goals and help establish goals for the following year.

Board members share a passionate commitment and dedication to Jewish education and to the success and future of the Day School. Members of the board of trustees have expertise and experience in education, business, law, finance, marketing, real estate, development and philanthropy. Although the term of each trustee is one year, many trustees serve for many consecutive years.

At the end of World War II, Rabbi Goldman envisioned an independent Jewish day school in the heart of Chicago. He dreamed of a school with strong values and an inspiring commitment to excellence in general and Jewish studies. Sixty years later, the Day School's Board of Trustees is the guardian of this important vision and is working hard to ensure its future.
